Tropical World is one of Leeds’ most exciting attractions, filled with animals and plants from across the globe. Step inside and you’ll walk straight into hot, humid rainforests, dry deserts, and even a nocturnal house where day turns into night! It’s like travelling across continents without ever leaving Leeds.
The adventure begins with colourful butterflies fluttering above your head and exotic plants growing all around you. As you explore, you might meet cheeky meerkats, slithering snakes, brightly coloured parrots, and even crocodiles. Each area is designed to show how different animals and plants survive in their natural habitats, from the jungle to the desert.
Fun fact: Tropical World is home to one of the largest collections of tropical plants outside of Kew Gardens in London, and it’s famous for its butterflies that often land right on visitors’ shoulders!
During your visit, you’ll walk through glasshouses and animal zones, spotting creatures from every corner of the world. Look out for the fascinating nocturnal animals like fruit bats and bush babies, or stop and watch the koi carp glide through the ponds. 0:35 – The group gathers outside the main entrance. Activity Leader gives an introduction to Tropical world.
0:40 – Begin the self-guided tour of Tropical world
2:20 – Regroup in front of the entrance
2:25 – Prepare for departure; students gather belongings and use restrooms if needed.
2:30 – Leave the Tropical World and begin the return journey by public transport.
3:15 – Arrive back at The university of Law

In the desert zone you’ll meet the cheeky meerkats, one of the most popular attractions. They love to pop their heads up and keep watch. You can also see other small mammals exploring their habitats.
Look out for: The meerkats standing tall like little guards.
Fun fact: A group of meerkats is called a mob or a gang
From snakes and lizards to scorpions and tarantulas, this section is full of fascinating (and sometimes scary!) creatures.
Look out for: The green iguanas basking under the lamps.
Fun fact: Some reptiles at Tropical World can live longer than 30 years.
Here, day turns into night. You’ll find fruit bats, bush babies, and other animals that are most active in the dark.
Look out for: The bats flying overhead and the glowing eyes of nocturnal animals.
Fun fact: Bush babies get their name from their loud, baby-like cries at night.
Tropical World also has ponds and aquariums where you’ll see fish, frogs, and even crocodiles.
Look out for: The giant koi carp swimming lazily in the water.
